Abstract
Study Design – Prospective Randomized interventional study.
Purpose – Comparing two techniques of IOL implantation in bilateral paediatric cataract cases.
Methods – 21 children with bilateral congenital cataracts in the age group of 2-8 years were studied. One eye of all patients underwent in the bag IOL implantation along with PPCCC and anterior vitrectomy (Group1) while in the other eye IOL implantation with optic capture through a PPCCC without anterior vitrectomy (Group 2) . Follow up parameters of surgical time, post operative IOL centration, visual axis opacification etc. were noted at regular intervals over 24 months.
Results – Almost all eyes in both groups maintained a clinically centered IOL with clear visual axis. VAO ocurred in 3 cases of in the bag IOL and 2 cases of posterior optic capture.
Conclusion – The two methods work equally well in preventing visual axis opacification . We found in the bag IOL implantation easier to perform in complicated cataracts.
