Abstract

STUDY DESIGN: CASE REPORT
PURPOSE: To report a rare case of bilateral vision loss due to uremic optic neuropathy with chronic kidney disease.
METHODS: A 62-year-old male with chronic kidney disease and hypertension was referred to the Ophthalmology OPD from nephrology with complaints of sudden onset painless loss of vision of 4 days duration. On ocular examination, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was hand movements close to face in both eyes. Dilated fundus examination revealed mildly hyperaemic edematous disc bilaterally. Rest of the ocular findings were normal.
RESULTS: Diagnosed as a case of bilateral uremic optic neuropathy. The patient was immediately started on haemodialysis and corticosteroid therapy. On 1 month follow up the vision improved to 6\12 in both eyes with resolution of disc edema.
CONCLUSION: Uremic optic neuropathy can be managed with multidisciplinary approach.
