Abstract

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective, analytical study
PURPOSE: To determine the mode of injury, clinical profile at presentation, and prognostic factors of postoperative visual outcome of traumatic cataracts.
METHODS: Patients with traumatic cataracts presented between the duration of March 2021 and July 2023 were retrospectively analyzed for their demographic profile, mode of injury, duration since injury, clinical profile, surgical intervention, and visual outcome.
RESULTS: 38 eyes of 38 patients were included of which 32 were males with 23 children aged <18 years. 21 patients had penetrating injury and the rest sustained blunt trauma. Preoperative vision ranged from perception of light to 6/36 and postoperative vision ranged from 6/60 to 6/6. Postoperative best corrected visual acuity of 6/18 or better was observed in 26 patients.
CONCLUSION: Mode of injury, time since trauma, associated injury, and presenting vision were the major prognostic factors affecting the final visual outcome.
