Abstract

P: To present experience with Ethibond-related sling infections(ERSI) in severe ptosis
M: Retrospective, interventional case series of 177 eyes (150 patients), following frontalis suspension with Ethibond between January 2016 to February 2022, who developed chronic sling infection, beyond 6 weeks post–surgery.
R: Delayed ERSIs were noted in 14 eyes(13, 8%), of which 8 were females. Time interval from surgery to presentation was 7.5 months(2.5 months-2.5 years). 11 eyes underwent sling explant. Of the three who received initial antibiotic course, two eventually needed sling removal. Microbiology was available in 7 eyes(50%) with 6 positive cultures. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common organism. 83.3%(5/6) were resistant to fluoroquinolones(FQs). In 8 cases, symptoms resolved within 4 weeks of removal.
C: Ethibond has 8% incidence of delayed infections with majority requiring sling removal. With increased resistance to FQs, authors recommend early sling removal in these cases.
