Abstract
Background: To assess the correlation of HbA1c level in Diabetic Retinopathy patients suffering from Type II DM.
Methods: It is a descriptive observational study of 500 Type II DM patients having DR who attended Ophthalmology OPD at our hospital. All the patients were subjected to the basic blood investigations, slit lamp and dilated fundus examination. The results were tabulated according to the severity of DR and level of HbA1c levels.
Results: Out of 500 patients in the study, mean age of Type II DM patients was 52.4±8.62years, out of which 69.2% were male and 30.8% were female. The mean duration of DM was 6.50±4.63 years. The mean of HbA1c is in the study population was 8.4±1.78. Majority (45.6%) patients were moderate NPDR. The severity of DR increased with increase in the level of HbA1c level.
Conclusion: Our study showed that with increase in the level of HbA1c, the severity of the DR increases. There was a positive correlation between the level of HbA1c and severity of DR.
