Abstract
Aim: To determine the association between haemodialysis and corticosteroid therapy and new-onset glaucoma. Introduction: End-stage renal disease (ESRD), a chronic condition; patients rely on maintenance dialysis or a renal transplant. Intraocular pressure changes during haemodialysis have been discussed in several studies.Clinical presentation: A 21yr old student with ESRD was started on HD and IV Methylprednisolone, which led to blurring of vision, acute rise in IOP of >40mm of HG and optic disc changes. Despite various treatments, including oral steroids, maximum medical therapy with antiglaucoma medications and renal transplant the IOP remained high. Finally, bilateral trabeculectomy was performed, resulting in reduced IOP and improved vision. Conclusion:Regular ophthalmic examinations in patients undergoing dialysis and corticosteroid therapy to identify individuals at risk of glaucoma and prevent permanent vision loss caused by elevated IOP
